With the advent of high-definition home video and audio, it is now possible to view films at home that will look and sound at least as good as they did in the cinema. To achieve this, you will need to make sure your home cinema setup meets the requirements of reading, converting and displaying a high-def source.
To begin with, you will need a hi-def source. Many cable and satellite packages offer hi-def channels, but many channels use large amounts of compression to squeeze multiple high-def channels into a limited amount of bandwidth. This causes images to have compression artefacts, such as macro blocking, mosquito noise or banding. Audio can also be affected, with very low or high frequencies clipped and complex parts of the soundtrack sounding "muddy".

The same problem is present on the new "download" services that allow you to download and watch a film for a fixed price. Although less noticeable, the problems of compression are still visible. Lastly, some DVD players will provide "up-scaling" of standard DVD's, and while this can be an improvement on letting your TV upscale the image, it's not a true high-definition signal, and will appear soft and blurred.

The best source for Hi-Definition content is from a Blu-Ray disc, where there is enough space to store the image without introducing noticeable compression artefacts, and to hold completely lossless sound. Look for a player with an internet connection for easy updates to the firmware, or alternatively consider a Sony Playstation 3 console, which is also a very high-quality Blu-Ray player.

With a hi-def system, only one cable, HDMI, is required to transmit both picture and sound. A HDMI cable is a digital connection, so there are fewer problems from noise or interference. Beware overpriced cables; the digital signal means expensive multi-layered insulation is not necessary. Pay no more than you would for good computer DVI cable, on which the HDMI standard is based.

The hi-def signal will first go into your home-cinema amplifier, which will need a HDMI input. The amplifier needs to be capable of decoding the sound formats used by the Blu-Ray disc. The most common formats are Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD, these are updates of the formats used on DVD's, and all modern home cinema amps should decode them. Look out for Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio support, these are new formats for maximum-quality lossless sound, but only the latest or more expensive amps have support for these right now. Lastly you may see LPCM audio tracks. These are lossless and uncompressed, so no decoding is required and all amps can play them.

Your amp should have a HDMI output that will allow you to connect it to your TV or Projector. With the amp handling the audio, the video signal is fed back out and into your display. To properly function your display will need to be "HDCP compliant", HDCP stands for HD "Copy Protection", and only HDMI inputs with the built in HDCP technology can decode HD video. All newer displays have this, but some early TV's and projectors had HDMI sockets that missed out the HDCP chip.

There are several different resolutions that can be called High Definition. 720p and 1080i are used by some TV channels and also hi-def video games. The highest standard is 1080p, and is used by Blu-Ray movies. Most new displays will handle all three formats, but when buying a TV or projector, check the native resolution, the number of physical lines of picture it can display. TV's that only have a native resolution of 720 will be forced to scale a 1080p signal down, which will reduce the picture detail and may introduce artefacts.

About the Author

You can find more information on High Definition Home Theatre, Home Cinema and Projectors at our website.

Getting the Best Sound from Your System with the Right Audio Equipment

Today good sound and picture quality is important to those who like to see and hear things the way that they were intended to be seen and heard. Many of us don't realize how much our sound and picture is being distorted when we use the wrong audio equipment. For this reason, if you want to be sure that you are seeing and hearing things in the very best way, you will want to be sure that you look into Marantz audio equipment as well as all of the high quality cabling that is necessary to bring you the sound and picture that you expect.

Marantz is a name that has been around in the premium home entertainment business since the 1950's. Over the years it has been this name that has been responsible for items such as the Model 7 preamplifier, the Model 9 monoblock, the 2200 receivers, laserdisc players, certified receivers for high quality pictures, and today the Super Audio CD player. Over the years the company has been dedicated to what they refer to as "sonic superiority" and all of their products will offer exactly this to you. Today their receivers can be used to enhance the quality of your most modern technologies such as DLP projection and plasma monitors. Today the company is as dedicated to picture quality as they are to sound quality.

If you buy a Marantz system you will want to make sure that you have the cabling that is necessary to deliver the best sound and picture possible. Most would agree that the proper cabling to use with any Marantz system would have to be Monster HDMI cable. You may have seen Monster cable in the stores and felt shocked by the prices. This is the only way to get the true benefit of a Marantz system because you get the speed necessary to bring you true to life pictures and sound. With Monster Cable you are going to be able to accommodate the need for speed from the Marantz system so you do not get any distortion in your audio or video, if applicable, which will allow you to see and hear things the way they would be seen or heard if you were in a theatre or recording studio.

If you will not settle for anything less than the best than you will definitely want to get one of these quality receivers as well as the Monster cable to go along with it. The combination of the two will bring you the superior sound that you have been looking for that will enhance your favorite sounds whether it is music or television.

About the Author
Caitlina Fuller is a freelance writer.

DVD Players: A theatre in home

The DVD players are source of entertainment for music lovers and regular movie watchers. It can create drama, danger, even a feeling of strength depending on the visuals that go along with it. Bass is one of the most important elements of any audio format because it provides balance and contrast to the overall score of a movie, television show, even commercial. Quality bass in a sound system is impressive while not being overpowering.

In a 5.1 surround sound system, one of the most common for home theater installations, the '.1' is the bass. The speaker for the bass sounds on a soundtrack is called a subwoofer. Lower frequency sound waves use a larger diaphragm to move the amount of air it takes to make these sounds. While smaller speakers can produce these lower frequency waves, they typically cannot produce the kind of quality that one would expect from a quality theater. Smaller speakers can often sound tinny when trying to produce these lower sounds. Large home theatre speaker towers are capable of handling this part of the soundtrack though it may require the reduction of sound quality from the mid and high range frequency speakers.

Choosing a good sound system with a quality bass speaker is not impossible, even for people who do not have a lot of experience. First, start with the subwoofer. Homeowners will need to consider whether they require a passive sub or an active woofer. A passive subwoofer does not need a separate power supply. Rather it uses power from the same amp that is driving the other home theatre speakers. Volume from the amplifier can usually be controlled, there is less control overall with a passive sub. An active sub has a separate power supply. This means that the signal received from the amplifier/receiver is enhanced by the subwoofer itself, without taking any of the power from the other speakers.

Once you have your home theater subwoofer and other speakers picked out, lay them out to get the best sound from each. Bass sound is omni-directional, meaning that it goes out from the speaker in all direction. To decide where to place the subwoofer, put it in the same position that you will be sitting in, whether it is on the couch facing the television screen or in a home theater chair. Turn on a favorite film then move around your room and listen. Find the spot that the bass sounds best and move your subwoofer to that location. It can be set on the ground, on a shelf or off of a wall depending on where you feel the best low tone sound is heard. Since the sounds are going out and bouncing around the room in roughly the same direction, the sound should be great when you get it into place.

We've all heard the laments of mothers and fathers forced to deal with the incessant thumping and pounding of boom box bass lines from their adolescent's car or room. There is something to say for the potential for this phenomenon to occur in a home theater as well. While walls, ceiling and floor will generally block high sound frequencies from leaving the room, they can actually increase the volume of the lower range sounds. While laying out your speakers, try to also find the right volume balance for all frequencies that your family can enjoy the sound quality a bass can provide without driving your neighbors crazy.

~Ben Anton, 2008
About the Author
Ben Anton lives in the Northwest and writes for Ronny's 5th St. Audio Vision.Oregon Home Theater Audio: Find the best in PSB, Dali and Quad speakers and receivers at RonnysAudioVision.com, the Northwest's complete home theatre audio and video web site.

Alpine Amplifiers Rock

Anytime a discussion about car audio comes up, brand-name Alpine amplifiers naturally come up too. They've established themselves as specialists in mobile multimedia -- which means they offer a comprehensive product line designed to incorporate sound security and navigation products for your car. Alpine is just one of those internationally known brand names -- famous for providing some of the best sound quality in some of the smallest packages available. They are even stackable but just as powerful as larger amplifiers typically used in vehicles, which is pretty cool considering the smaller amount of space you have in your car.

Some of them even come with any remote control which is also a kick and helps to show off to your buddies of course. It's no wonder that Alpine amplifiers are some of the most popular audio amplifiers in the industry combining both power and precision for exceptional sound output.
The PDX series remains one of the most popular amplifiers in demand all over the world today. It offers six different amps, with the top of the line PDX-1.1000 model pumping an amazing 1000 W. There are the stereo channels and the DVD audio support systems. For cars and other vehicles with the space constraint in mind, smaller and more compact amplifiers have been designed. They come even as small as 5.4cm high and 30.6 wide and there are others which measure 10+cms high and about 43cm wide. Car amplifiers have a class A/B MOSFET Circuitry which heightens the audio quality and the epoxy circuit board that ensures longer life because it comes with semi double glass. There is the variable high and low pass crossover of 50 to 120Hz and the bass boost buttons that can be switched on and off as required.

There are various brands offered in the market and most of them come at affordable prices. There are the RCA throughput connections which can be utilised effectively by the listener.

There is a three way protection circuitry which offers additional security in the car. Keeping the noise levels on the road in mind a special device has been added to help to keep the signal to noise ratio less than 100B.

The cooling fans guard against over heating. The block terminals of the amplifiers are made out of nickel plated coatings. The high gloss chrome plated finish gives a very sleek look to the device and enhances the ambience of the interior of the car. The special indications show up with cobalt blue illumination.

There are more complex amplifiers which come with more fine tuning features and tone adjustments. For better stereo effect there is a switch to balance the tone. There are five inputs found within the unit along with the tape unit. For outstanding amplification effects about 50RMS power is required.

For home needs where there is more space and the music system can be enhanced by better amplification the specifications may be slightly different. Some amplifiers measure 420mm width, 113mm height and 369mm depth. The quick response power supply circuit ensures that there is immediate response.

There are two phone pre - amplifiers and can function as AV receivers. Some offer a firm under base construction and stabilizing plate. There are aluminum side panels and metal insulators, a honey comb chassis and twin mono symmetrical construction. The equivalent serial resistance is a useful feature for high speed responses. Some also offer continuous power output up to 20 to 20,0000Hz at four Ohms and eight Ohms. The sound retriever analogue and the large speaker terminal for that extra amplification effect are quite out of ordinary. There is also the System remote control unit and LCD dimmer. Many of these are power saving machines because they run on low power.

Read unbiased reviews on Alpine, Cambridge, Sony amplifiers and much more at amplifiers reviews site.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Victor_Thomas

Why A Complete Car Audio System Is Necessary

In a complete car audio system, four aspects come up. Selection of an audio system for your car can be as tough as buying clothes from a sales counter. In this case, at least a working knowledge on basic components of car system shall stand in good stead for the customer.

Deck, amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers are the essential ingredients of a car stereo system. A deck can range from simple cassette deck and CD player to hi-fi MP3 and mini disc gizmo. An amplifier, usually the symbol of power in the audio system, precisely, the power to blast, can have 1 to 7 channels. Fancy speakers will give the user enough mileage to hear and be heard. Subwoofers complement the low frequencies and bring forth the vibrations in a car that sets the rhythm in motion for the user.

Usually, most systems come with the facility of access to FM and AM radio. Different models of stereo can have multi channel mobile sound processors, digital media, navigation, steering wheel audio control adapter, etc. Acoustics must be adopted in the vehicle for maximum output from minimum input of the system. Also, it must be installed in the best possible manner for maximum audibility of the passengers and yet must not impinge on the guidelines set by motor vehicles authority.

Before zeroing in on one option, a user can easily shop via Internet from various service providers and settle for the best price. Here, quality and pricing will be complementary as it is a luxury item.

Also, the music system must be easy to handle and operate. As the user will mostly concentrate on driving while operating the system, cumbersome operations can create confusion and even disaster. Features of the audio system must also be compatible with the vehicle itself. A sleek car can do without a very big gadget, while larger vehicles can have added features in the stereo system.

Fitting the audio system into the car is an important consideration before you buy. Some service providers offer free services. Also, a user has to learn whether his motor insurance covers the audio system as well.

If you are a new user, it is best to go for simple audio system, instead of the advanced and highly customized ones. Also, it is better to use cheaper audio systems in the car used especially for children, as they are prone to damage it by their persistent experimentation. Most importantly, it is always advisable for the user to stick to his budget while choosing an audio system. One must remember that with the frenetic pace of technology and digitalization even the most advanced system can fall by the wayside within a span of as little as six months.

Hence a user must look for a quality, cheap and effective audio system for his recreation while he takes a ride out in this fast changing world.

About the Author
Victor Epand is an expert consultant for used DVDs, used movies, and used car stereos. The term woofer is the modernized expression for speakers. Infact the term is used for the loudspeaker. Basically, woofers are the drivers that produce low frequency sound, ranges from 40 hertz to a kilohertz higher. Car woofers usually reproduce low bass frequency sound, such as audio frequencies below 35 Hz.

Audio systems used in cars most of the time are of standard quality. They mainly include a radio, compact disc player and a number of loudspeakers like tweeters, speakers and woofers. Actually, the sound quality obtained from the audio system depends on the loudspeakers used in the system. But the car speakers produce low frequency output and high power signal that generates acoustic energy, which tends to affect the output of the sensor. These acoustic problems that generally happen in the car interiors is that it becomes too reflective and noisy at ample frequencies. Therefore, for reinforcing lower band sounds in the car audio system, car woofers are additionally installed on the trunk of the car.

One more reason for installing the car woofers additionally in the back seat space or trunk of the car is the limited space. And it is just next to impossible to fit those drivers into doors or dashboard.

Sometimes people in a hope to produce very high sound pressure levels in the confines of their cars, add woofers in the cabin. It can be said that this sound pressure level competition has increased the demand for the car woofers. But if minutely considered, in the sound quality level, they have not gained much popularity.

There are normal consumer grade woofers that are capable of generating extremely high levels in cars due to the small volume of the typical car interior. But high sound levels are not actually recommended as they can cause hearing loss, if someone is exposed to them for longer period of time.

The most common car woofers used are the electrodynamic driver. They use a cone that is driven by a voice coil, surrounded by a magnetic field. The voice coil and the magnet form a linear electric motor. When current flows through the voice coil, it moves in relation to the frame, causing the coil to push or pull on the driver cone in a piston like way. However, the voice coil is attached by adhesives to the back of the speaker cone. And finally, the motion of the cone creates sound waves as it moves in and out.

However, there are various types of car woofers that produce different level of sound. Component woofers give powerful and accurate bass. It only needs to be connected to the amplifier and fit the woofer into an enclosure.

Enclosed woofer is a woofer that is matched to the enclosure of the car, at the factory.
Custom-fit woofer, is designed to fit into unused spaces of the cars. There are many models of this kind of woofer that come in well-built amplifiers for an all in one bass solution.

Powered woofer is a combination of a woofer and amplifier in a compatible enclosure. They come in variety of sizes like compact, small and large.

About the Author
Victor Epand is an expert consultant for used DVDs, used movies, and used car stereos. Today, in-vehicle multimedia systems include DVD video, television and navigation systems with local hotspot news. Common to all systems is the sound quality.

The quality of sound in a car audio system depends upon a number of factors; the type and quality of the media player system, the type of speakers used, the acoustics of the vehicle and interference from other devices.

Type and Quality of Media Player System

Before we look at the different types of in-vehicle media players it pays to have a basic understanding of audio quality. When deciding what type of audio system to install, and also when comparing one make and model to another, there are two key specifications to consider:
Signal-to-noise ratio [SNR] - a measure of signal strength compared to background noise in the signal or equipment. Measured in decibels. The higher the dB, the better. A car CD player has an SNR of 90 or 100 dB.

Frequency response [FR] - a measure of how much of the audio spectrum, from bass to treble, gets reproduced. It's measured as a range in Hertz, and the wider the range, the better. Look for a CD player with a range of at least 10-20k Hz.

An FM radio, cassette player, and CD player all have different measurements for these specs. To help understand these two specifications, let's compare a car tape cassette player and a car CD player.

Cassette player has an SNR of 50-70 dB. This is much lower than a CD player, so the sound quality degrades at each end of the spectrum. The FR is around 30-18k Hz for a cassette player, so does not contribute as much to sound quality as the SNR. That's why overall, a car CD player gives a much better sound than a cassette tape player.

Media players in vehicles today are either radio tuner, CD player/changer, or Digital Audio player.

CD Players & Changers

There are a number of options when it comes to playing CD's in a vehicle:

1. An in-dash CD Player - often combined with radio tuner, WMA/MP3 player
2. An in-dash CD Receiver - with a multiple CD cassette / changer located elsewhere in the vehicle
3. Connect a portable CD player to an existing in-dash audio unit using either a cable and adapter or a bluetooth wireless connection.

When choosing a car CD player the first two things to consider are:

1. Will it physically fit into the vehicle?
2. Will it integrate cosmetically with the dash and other electronics?
Most decks have standardized form factors; so fit most cars, but there are exceptions, so make sure that the deck is suited for your car. You are usually pretty safe is the car stereo is made for the same market as the source of your car.

Cosmetic integration is a little more complex, but in many cases easily resolved through customisation features. For instance, many decks allow you to change the faceplates and color of the display.

Digital Audio Car Systems

With most home audio systems and portable players giving crisp quality sound using digital audio, we are no longer satisfied with the flat, bland analog sound from older car audio systems.
If you normally store your digital music files on CD, a compatible stereo or changer is a good option. Up to 10 hours of music [250 songs] can be stored on a single disc and allows use of random shuffling and repeat options. This disadvantage is ease of use, having to load and unload from cassettes located in the boot or under seats, and the limited file formats that your stereo can play back.

So now you have the media player selected, what about the speaker system.

Car Speaker System

The speaker system can be thought of in two parts: the channel amplifier and the physical speaker units.

Car amplifiers power the speakers in your car stereo system to provide crisp sound quality at high volumes. Each speaker requires one channel of amplification. This means a 4-channel amplifier, will support four speakers. And choice of speakers is not limited either. With a range of options for your basic stereo speakers [2-channel], you can supplement the high note quality using a tweeter and the low bass notes with a sub-woofer. This gives you a standard 4-channel sound system that will rival your home audio system.

Adding to a basic car stereo option typically involves adding subwoofers, amplifiers and crossovers to tailor the output sound to personal tastes. This does not mean the result is the boorish, obnoxious bass boom boxing that invades the entire neighbourhood. A subwoofer adds quality and purity to music.

For details of specifications on each part of your system, see Go-Reviews.com - Car Electronics Section

The main factors in selecting car speakers are:

- Design or Speaker Type
- Technical Specifications
- Fitting & Mounting

Speaker design is about the combination of sound drivers for midrange, subwoofer and tweeter. Depending upon the combination, the set is known as a two-way, three-way or four-way speaker system.

Car speaker specifications are similar to home audio speakers; the main difference in technical specification to compensate for the lower power outputs of car stereo receivers. Speaker technical specifications include: sensitivity, frequency response, signal to noise ratio, power handling and impedance. We will look at these specification in more detail in subsequent articles.
The fittings and mountings are selected depending upon where you choose to position the speakers. Car audio speakers are either: top mounted or bottom mounted. Clearance depth is most important when installing new speakers in a non-factory speaker location. So check all of your components carefully before purchase.

With such a range of combinations available the Internet provides a valuable resource in car electronics reviews. Sites like Go-Reviews.com seek out reviews and consolidate the recommendations to give you a quick reference buying guide.

About the Author
Nicola is the product reviewer for Go-Reviews.com. High definition describes the audio feature or sound, as well as the picture on the TV set that you will be watching. Digitized surround sound, with Dolby noise reduction feature, is what you will be hearing when you turn on your high definition programming from DirecTV.

Digitized sound is easier to clean up in your receiver, before it goes through your speakers and on to your ears. The static and any collateral undesired noise is removed and what you are left with is a clean crisp CD quality surround sound that sounds excellent when you run it through your stereo speakers. High definition TVs have good speaker systems, so they can reproduce the better sound that comes in high definition.

If you want to take a look and listen to high definition TV programming, the place to go to do this is any electronics retailer now. Big screened high definition TVs are the new, must have, electronics component on the market and all the retailers are stocking them now.

If you are soon going to be in the market for a TV, then it might be prudent to spend the few extra dollars to switch over to a high definition TV. This is because you are going to be stuck with the TV you buy for years to come. High definition is here to stay and programming service providers like DirecTV will be enlarging their repertoire of high definition programming in the near future.

The audio feature is something that most people have always taken for granted and have accepted the level that came through with standard programming. At a theater though, the audio effects are incorporated into the programming more effectively. You can feel the base tones in your seat and music is far more dynamic. Theaters have been using surround sound all along and now you can have the same effects in your home with high definition surround sound from DirecTV.

With sports events, the roar of the crowd is more of a roar and any sounds that result from a heavily contested game you will experience with the players as they happen. On a big screen it puts you as close to the action as you can get, with out actually being at the actual event. Needless to say the effect on music programming is fantastic. When watching footage of war documentaries it will seem as though the bullets are whizzing right over your head and you are right there in the battle itself.

Why wait for the future technology in TV viewing to come to you, when you can bring it to your home or business with high definition programming from DirecTV. DirecTV has a great selection of well blended and balanced programming packages and it is easy to ad the high definition programming to them, or you can just get the high definition programming if that is what you wish. Its so easy to have it your way at DirecTV, the home of high definition and surround sound.

About the Author
Written by David Johnson. Not only simply that I owned that newest, cool in bound audio equipment, other than I owned sky-scraping end audio speakers that will now blow your mentality. I even have Stereo Pillow Speakers so I can listen in bed! The crash is definitely fantastic to listen to! all of my associates giggle at me for having that kind of audio equipment - my associates consider that it is a desecrate to own such sky-scraping end audio speakers.

You notice every one of us cover unchanged experience in melody. Every one of us is fond of punk astound, metal, hard-core, and mostly something that is deafening and rough to listen. Why we obtain sky-scraping end hi-fi speakers, they ask over, when you are listening to melody that is frequently deeply vague to hear to. Perhaps I sound like a snob to my associates at this point, however I do not sense that my associates value the superiority of the tunes that we are listening to.

Since this music we listen is punk astound, or metal, does not imply so as to it is clatter. Dissimilar to this, there is a vast arrangement of subtleness and degree in the quality of music that only good quality audio speakers be able to pick up. We found out this when we try to listen this. Certainly, it doesn't really matter how much number of the music we listen. The Rock and Rap music that I was hooked on to listen, for instance, a sound regarding the identical through sky-scraping end audio speakers when we hear it as it does in stumpy end speakers.

The sound to listen is usually subdued, feebly recorded, and done on imperfect equipment. Therefore, despite how awful the audio speakers you use, it truly will not create much of a distinction in the system that it comes throughout. For those things their right - sky-scraping end audio speakers actually are a desecrate. Although a group of metal, and even a few of the more ground-breaking and experimental punk rock music, the sky-scraping end audio speakers are actually vital. Presently, because kinds of music we hear is deafening this not mean that it doesn't have a broad series of sounds we listen to.

Sky-scraping end audio speakers can incarcerate the entire sound to the music, from the screaming highs to the blooming lows we hear, and the whole thing in between. Devoid of using good quality sky-scraping end audio speaker equipment, so much of the sound is missing to listen, and that is embarrassing.

My sky-scraping end audio speakers permit me to listen to sounds that I've never heard before in my entire life, and that I would not hear without my sky-scraping end audio speakers. It is my associates who are the snobs - stumpy reliability snobs. To my associates it seems similar to all sounds and equal. It is unlucky that my associates will fail to spot out on the entire sonic nuances that I obtain to listen. Other than that's the breaks!

Crizza_R Stereo Pillow Speakers

About the Author
independent

Bring Home The Home Theater Audio System!

Home theater audio system is gaining popularity all over. The interpretation of music has changed nowadays. People just don't want to hear the songs; they want to hear it clearly and too with special added effects. Everything changed with the introduction of the Dolby sound system in the 70's and ever since the way music was heard, changed. Now everyone wants to have their own home theater audio system. People want their audio systems to be trendy and in sync with the latest sound system. The home theaters have further added to its popularity. The popularity of these home theater audio systems is growing day by day and it's bound to grow even more in the coming future. This is one thing which the music lovers just can't miss.

Choose the best quality

A product is defined by its quality. So you must make sure that you get the best quality, never compromise on that. However you also need to keep a check on your budget. The general perception is that more the price, the better the product. This is actually true because quality products are usually priced high. However this is not always true. A highly priced product may not be of good quality. It thus becomes important to check the product's quality before buying it. For this you can request the working staff to give you a demo of the product. You can hear the sound of the audio system in listening rooms. This is important to make sure that you are buying what you actually wanted. You may end up with something bad if you don't listen to the audio system before buying it.

The size of the room determines the number of speakers

How does one decide as to which home theater audio system is best for them? One must buy the audio system according to the size of the room. The system must not be too big or too small for the room. It should just be perfect. If the room is big, six speakers are enough. In addition to the center speaker, there will be two front and rear side speakers. Addition of a subwoofer will make the total count six. The sound of the audio system can be further enhanced by making the subwoofer face the wall. This way, the whole wall will function as a subwoofer and the sound quality will be greatly increased. To get the maximum out of your home theater audio system, cover it up with a woven basket. This will increase its sound.

In case of a small room, three speakers are sufficient. In addition to a subwoofer there should be two rear speakers. A small room doesn't need too many speakers for it will take unnecessary space and will not serve any purpose. So be very careful while buying your audio system. Will Reece

With such a wide range of components and gadget on the market for car audio systems, the big question is "Where do I start?"

First you must decide what exactly you wish to do. If you are wanting to build a car audio system for a daily driver (the car you drive back and forth to work) with good sounds, but you are not interested in competing, a system can easily be put together for under $1000. However, if you are looking for the all-out bass monster, be prepared to drop in some big bucks into your system.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when building a car audio system is planning. Get an idea of where you are going to place components, subwoofers, amplifiers, and power distribution. A lot of headache can be avoided with the proper planning!!

For the basic system, lets look at some of the components needed. Let's first start with the head unit (CD player). Obviously you are going to want a nice head unit. If you start with a good quality cd player, and choose to upgrade your sound system in the future, purchase a head unit that will grow with you. Some of the features you may want to keep in mind are:

1. CD changer controls
2. XM / Sirius controls (if you decide to add Satellite radio in the future)
3. Dual RCA outputs (carries signal to the amplifiers)
4. Pause button (important for competing)
5. Detachable face, or other security devices
6. High voltage line driver - this will send the sound signal at a higher voltage to your amplifier/s reducing noise and improving overall sound quality.

After you have chosen your head unit, you will want to make a decision on amplifiers and subwoofers. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. A $30 subwoofer will be as big as a $300 subwoofer, but the capacities of each will differ greatly. Look at the power handling of each subwoofer and decide accordingly. You will want subwoofers will work with your amplifier/s (see compatibility).

You must also keep in mind the available space in your vehicle. Are you willing to give up your entire cargo area? How many subwoofers will fit? Decide on the size. Sizes will vary from 8" up to 18", some are square (Kicker), but most are round. Also keep in mind the resistance (ohms) of the subwoofer and make sure they are compatible with your amplifier/s (see compatibility). The subwoofer decision will also have an effect on the enclosure you decide to build or buy. For the basic system, I would recommend purchasing a pre-fabricated subwoofer enclosure. This will save you a bit of money and headache (especially if you end up building it two or three times!!). Make sure you take accurate measurement of your cargo area before building or buying an enclosure!!

Other components may be needed depending on the type of system you are building and how elaborate you want your sound to be. For the competition vehicle, figure on upgrading your alternator, adding a battery to your system (maybe more), running high quality RCA cables, power cables, ground cables, and speaker cable. You may need to add a capacitor to provide your amplifier with a reservoir of power for bigger hits from the subs. You may need an electronic crossover, an equalizer, replacement factory speakers, an amplifier for your mid-range and tweeters, additional speakers within your vehicle for staging, etc.

About The Author
Will Reece

I have been involved in the car audio arena for several years, and have competed locally in the Kansas City are with USACi. People, especially the younger generation, want to build the very best in car sound systems and they usually do not care what they cost. This can
become an expensive undertaking but for those who value music it is worth every penny.

Your first order of business is to decide on a proper car stereo head unit. This is the main control unit of the entire system and comes in the form of a tuner, compact disc player or cassette player or a combination of two. These days most people go with a compact disc player head unit as they are the most readily available and most people buy compact discs for their musical selection instead of cassette tapes that are somewhat hard to come by these days.

The head unit should be wired in where the existing stereo unit rests. The two may be different sizes so you will most likely need to buy a universal mounting kit. They are available from most large retailers and run under $25. Also, you should pick up a universal wiring harness to make the installation go more smoothly. If you have no knowledge of car wiring systems it is easy to short out the car or the stereo system if you do not know what you are doing. Universal wiring harnesses come with detailed instructions on matching up the wires by automotive type.

Next you will need to determine speakers for your sound system. This can be a tough decision depending on what your basic needs are. There are several speaker systems to choose from and you will need to pay close attention to the head unit you have purchased as it will tell you how many speakers it can handle on its own. Be sure to check the power rating and size of the
speakers. You have so much room to work with in your car without taking away from passenger space. However, some prefer to use the trunk space to mount speakers and other accessories.

Along with speakers there is the amplifier. The amplifier is a device that will boost overall power and provide better quality high volume sound to your system. Amplifiers are available in a wide variety of sizes and prices depending on the power you wish to have for your car sound system.

Extras would include MP3 hook up adapters, bass boosters, compact disc changers, and lights. All of these are available from large retailers nationwide. You could spend a little or a lot depending on the brand and quality that you desire.

Keep in mind that the more complicated a car sound system the harder it is to install. Some companies that sell complete systems offer free installation with a purchase. This is a wise choice for someone who knows little about car stereo installation. Not only will all the equipment be installed properly to guard against malfunction but it will also look nice. Part of installing a system is running wires and capping lines that can be difficult for someone unsure of what they are doing.

About the author:
Want to know more about car sound systems?
